FOUNDER & DIRECTOR OF SKYN DEEP
What Inspired You To Set Up Skyn Deep?
In 2014 I was involved in a car accident which led me to develop Fibromyalgia, a long-term health condition that causes chronic widespread pain and severe fatigue. Honestly, it was such a shock to my system and for a long time I didn't cope with it. After trying many different painkillers I kept reacting to each of them until eventually I just thought, maybe someone is trying to tell me that taking a tablet is not my path. So, I came off of everything and found a mindfulness course which really was the turning point for me. It helped me to change my mental processes and thoughts around pain. Physically it was difficult, but bit by bit I built myself up to be stronger and the rest, as they say, is history! I kind of came to this realisation that I wanted to help other people deal with pain. I believed that
because of my own experience I would be able to treat people in a unique and intuitive way, something which I still stand by to this day. Funnily enough, part of the Fibromyalgia means I am hypersensitive to touch, which has been a massive benefit as a therapist! I can feel the tiniest feedback of muscles, changes of blood flow and fibre twitches that other therapists can't feel... so actually, it's become an amazing advantage for me! I've come to realise that we all live with pain, whether physical, mental or emotional and part of my gift is to be able to help clients release and heal that.
What's Your Favourite Part Of Being A Therapist?
For me, I enjoy seeing how clients feel after their treatments. They have a real genuine appreciation for the energy I give when I treat them. Sometimes clients feel self-conscious of falling asleep but hearing that little off guard snore is the biggest round of applause for me! Knowing someone trusts me enough to be completely vulnerable like that is amazing to me.
What Therapies Are You Qualified In?
I am qualified in Swedish, Deep Tissue, Advanced Techniques, Pregnancy, Warm Bamboo, Hot & Cold Stone Therapy, On-Site Chair Massage, Manual Lymphatic Drainage and will soon be qualified in Level 5 Soft Tissue Therapy, which is like Sports Massage but more in depth. I am also qualified in Facials, Nails, Eyelashes, Eyebrows and Spa Body Treatments... I'm a bit of a one Woman band of beauty and wellness!
Where Do You See Yourself In 5 Years Time?
I'd like to study Reflexology, Indian Head and Oncology massage. I'm quite interested in pursuing Manual Lymphatic Drainage clinically so I can treat those with active lymphoedema. I'm really passionate and inspired by the field of body work and would love to travel the World to learn from authentic healers across different cultures, if they're willing to teach me! I'm currently studying a Masters degree in Psychology and would like to study the effects that massage therapy has on our physiology and brain waves for my thesis. I'm hoping I'll be able to produce a body of evidence that will give massage therapy scientific backing and justification for more widely available and accessible NHS funded programmes.
